Considering that we won eight of the fifteen events in the women's match, to finish joint third was disappointing.

In the men's match a disqualification for John Fenton in the walk and three no throws for Chris in the javelin cost us the few points required to finish second. On the bright side, Debbie and Julie both won two events. Judy, Rachel and Cath each won their individual events.

The high spots of the evening were the win in the four by 400m relay by Wendy, Judy, Julie and Debbie and especially the sight of a Birchfield first, second and third in the 3000m where three quarters of the National Road Relay Champion's team were running. Cath is due a special vote of thanks agreeing to run at short notice on a surface too smooth and flat to give her satisfaction. Without her effort the team would have finished in fifth place. Karen wasn't quite on top form and finished third in a good quality field in the walk.

Our men had three individual winners: Chris in the M50 discus, Ronnie in the M35 3000m and Gordon in the M60 3000m. We had four second places. These were Windel and Mike in the 800m A and B races, with a personal best for the latter, Paul in the M35 shot and the 4 by 400 relay team of Paul, Mike, Ronnie and Windel. Peter was third in the walk after getting points in the M50 200 and Mike was third in the M40 3000 after his great effort in the 800m. As expected, we were not very successful in the 200m races where Paul and Peter ran without spikes on a wet and slippery track. However the three races produced fourteen points in all, more than I had hoped.


The third meeting is at the Dell, Dudley on Wednesday 11th July. Please note the change in date and venue.

M40 Triple Jump
M50 Shot.
