Club
Birchfield Harriers is the UK’s premier athletics club and has been represented at every summer Olympics bar one since 1908. Based at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham we also have access to the High Performance Centre, an indoor facility which provides indoor training for a range of events including long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot putt, and pole vault.
We offer quality coaching on our club nights on Tuesday and Thursdays and we develop young talent through our AGA Academy which runs on Saturday mornings.
Club Management
The club is managed by a committee of elected officers each of whom has a specific responsibility. In addition we have an administration manager who deals with day to day queries during our office hours which are 10am to 2pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 2pm-6pm Tuesday and Thursday.
History
Aston Lower Grounds, which was part of the grounds of Aston Hall in Birmingham, was a major venue for sporting clubs in the region. Warwickshire Country Cricket Club played some games there before moving to Edgbaston in 1886 and Aston Villa football club played their first matches here in 1874 here before moving g to their present location. Some years later a cinder path was laid and Birchfield Harriers held its first track meeting in 1879.
The club, Birchfield Harriers, was created as the result of dissatisfaction with a cross country race which resulted in a group of runners agreeing to form their own athletics club. The club then took its name from the Birmingham district in which they based their activities and Birchfield Harriers was created.
Birchfield Harriers has been at the forefront of innovation and development of the sport of athletics for more than a century and a quarter, being the first club to own its own track. With an enduring reputation in distance running and multi events, the “Stags” have also had a significant impact on track and field events, not only at national level but also on the global stage.
