We turned out strong teams in both the men’s and women’s A finals. Unfortunately Warren was suffering from a stomach bug on the day and was not at his best, and Julie was unable to come, but apart from this it is difficult to see how either team could have been stronger given the events to be contested and our long term injury list. Everyone competed hard and almost all had at least one season’s best and did more than one event.

Winning a cup final event is a fine achievement requiring a very high standard of performance. On the track Wendy won the 400m and Karen the 2k walk, Darrell followed his win in the 400m with another in the 200m and Gordon won his 3000m by half a lap. All these were very good performances, all done in personal or season’s best times. On the field Russell won the hammer by nearly six metres and Chris his shot putt by one metre in a personal best, both huge margins.

Judy was second in her two sprint races with one season’s best, and Hilary and Barrie did the same in the W50 400 and M60 high jump. Windel ran a personal best to finish third in the 800m, Ann needed a season’s best to equal that placing in her 800 and Tony was third in the walk. Hilary was our busiest athlete with third place in the 1500 and long jump as well as coming fourth in the 100m and running the first leg for the relay team which finished third. Carol was third in the discus, fourth in the javelin and shot and fifth in the high jump. Warren, Windel, Ann, Judy, Barry, Karen and Chris finished fourth in their 100, 1500, 200, long jump, triple jump and discuses respectively. Emma was fifth in the 3000 and 1500, as was Wendy in the 800, Tom (1500), Barry (M40 long jump), Jenny (shot) and Robin (discus). The men’s 4 by 100 team were also fifth.

Nobody finished last. Four of the seven who were sixth did so with season’s bests. These were Wilf in the 800, Tom in the 3000, Robin in the 400 and Emma in the high jump while Mike in the 3000 and Allan in his 200 were just outside their SBs. Although Peter Boszko could finish only seventh in the M40 javelin it was a noteworthy effort since it was only his second competition, his age group is M50 and he improved his personal best by seven metres.
