Midland Veterans
Track & Field Cup Final at the Dell,
August 31st,2003
When I went on holiday a week
before the cup final I was optimistic that the men’s team would make a strong
challenge and that the women’s team would also do quite well. I was
disappointed to come home to learn of a number of withdrawals and particularly
that I would have to compete in a number of events rather than one, and
especially that Hilary Boszco’s injured toe had not healed and Mike Fox had
crocked himself. Despite these problems we still produced better results than
last year and finished 4th in the men’s A final and 5th
in the women’s A final giving us a very close 3rd in the Central TV
Trophy. The eagle eyed will spot that the points totals on the results sheet
differ from the official results posted on the BMAF website and I am told other
team’s totals are not correct so we await finalised team results.
In total we had four individual
winners from the ever brilliant and dependable Warren, Darrell, Bob and Marina
in the 100,400,2K walk and high jump. We had more nearly three times that number
of second places: for Wendy and Warren in exciting 200s,Allan and Ian in equally
exciting 100 and 1500s,and, with personal bests, Ann in the 800 and Julie and
Jag in the triple jump. Marina added two more in the hammer and discus, Carol
was second in the javelin and the women’s 4 X 100 team got the eleventh.
There
were four third place finishes, Wendy in the 100, Ted, in a personal best, in
the M60 3000, Carol in the hammer and the scratch men’s 4 X 100 team whose
first two runners had a combined age of 133. Great work lads.
Wendel finished 4th in the 800 in a season’s best and Jag
had two more in finishing 4th in both the javelin and discus. Jenny
was 4th in the shot and Wendy in the 400.
My sincere thanks to all members
of the team and for the super team spirit shown, exemplified by Marina in the
1500m, an injured Wilf in the 800, Darrell running the 400 after tweaking his
hamstring in the high jump, Carol with her eight (yes 8) events, Allan in the
M50 200 and Ann in her “favourite” 3000. Thanks also to Jenny for
officiating and Mariane for the raffle.
Good luck to those of you
competing in the Inter-area match at Warrington on 21st.
