Race Report

Due to the unwelcome advent of electronic timing our tent was banished to the nursery slopes approaching the finish, along with several other disgruntled teams. How the position of a tent could affect the timing system was never quite established. What was established was that thick team managers like Dave, Tom and me (not Tom actually) don’t like multi tasking any more than is absolutely essential, so we don’t like chips. The weather was much improved for the early part of the day, and as usual all the ladies turned up without mishap in good time. Sadly Clare Grice had to withdraw at the last minute with a lung infection.

I don’t want to go on about this too much but there’s a spirit of bonhomie about the team of late, it has a lot to do with a couple of basket cases joining ranks, names withheld for legal reasons.

The Race

In the A team on leg 1 young Fliss Bemrose, who for some strange reason best known to her, ran with her Club vest over the top half of her pyjamas. This girl is seriously away with the fairies but shows real promise.

I should be able to tell you where she came back but meanwhile in the B team, Claire Beaumont had negotiated the hilly start admirably and was running along the top road, at this point she decided enough was enough and blacked out, showing little regard for the subsequent members of her team! Within a few minutes half the population of Sutton Park came to tell me about it and the rest of the race passed by in a bit of a blur, I know I said some time ago that if you want a mention do something interesting, but honestly, I’ll settle for wearing pyjamas or some thing like that; Back to the A team Faye Manger, as usual, put in a good performance, followed by Cath Mijovic who recorded the team’s fastest time ,and also ran quicker than all but two male vets. Rachel Cook had a lonely run but held her place, Louise Harman and Michelle Tanner ran the last two legs within six seconds of each other.

Naturally there was a slight hiatus for the remaining incomplete B Team runners while the Race referee tried to work out what to do when the chips are down, eventually he allowed Hannah Hore and trendy Wendy Morant to run their legs.

Altogether a strange race for us, but we finished in 9th place in 1:58:25.
