MVAC Road Relays, 2nd April, Chasewater 2006

In the 90’s these relays always acted as a final selection race for the National Relays after having competed in relays at Milton Keynes; Wolverhampton; Warwickshire; Midlands; Wolverhampton and Gloucester. Now they appear a little earlier in the calendar and, as a lot of other races, are less supported. However, it was good to get out three teams plus a mixed team and everyone agreed that we could now build on this base.

The M35-49 team started with a solid run from Mike. Still not 100% fit, Mike handed over to also not so fit Gerry, who ran a good leg before handing over to Derek. A lonely leg ensued just failing to get under 16 minutes for the 5k leg. A clocking of 17-03 put him in the top dozen or so fastest times on the day. Paul completed the team and came home in 6th place overall.

The M50-59 team all finished within 2 minutes of each other to take the 4th spot in their category. They were 12 minutes behind the 3rd placed team and our M60 team were 6½ minutes faster, so a little improvement is needed here! The aforementioned M60 team, consisting of Alex; Barry and Gordon gained the winners’ prize and a mixed team of Wilf; Ann and Lynette finished the 6th composite team.

Owing to dropouts we were unable to field an M70 team (despite MVAC purchasing special prizes) or a second M50 team.

My thanks go to last minute runners Ann and Lynette for filling in the places and allowing all our entrants to run in complete teams.
