GRAND PRIX 2005

Race 6, Warwickshire Relays, 26th March, Sutton Park

When the Road Running Sub-Committee put this race on the GP, I wondered if it was a good choice. It wasn’t a ‘straight’ race, different legs, different conditions and everyone had to be entered by their respective team managers. But it has introduced more competition into the GP, if it can be sustained and it did introduce 13 newcomers to the GP, which incidentally, we have organised since 1987. Good choice? Bad choice? We now need the feedback from you!

The official distance for this relay is 2.75 miles. I have had to extrapolate the age standards in the WAVA Tables from the 5k (3.1 miles) distance, so the percentage performance is as near accurate as possible.

Just to prove that a good young ‘un will beat a good old ‘un, even on age grading, the first three were under veteran age. Although technically, Andy is now a vet (master) under the new age group ruling, which hasn’t yet been fully implemented. The first 6 all scored over 80% National Standard. John Potts in his first outing in the GP for a number of years scored a very creditable 81.2%. Now 60, John still has problems with worn out knees but refuses to be beaten and despite throwing up in the bushes was pleased with his performance.

With Alex not competing owing to work commitments, Martin, being the only one to complete all 6 races so far, has gone into the overall lead in the GP with 278 points. Alex, now in 2nd place, is 16 points behind but with only the best 6 races to count, tactics now come in to play! Third to sixth places remain unchanged, John Adams moves from 11th to 8th and Michael Morley moves up into 7th place.
