Race 9, The Wolverhampton Half Marathon, 4th September
After the early morning mist had been burnt off, we were greeted to a rather hot day, wonderful for the spectators but not so good for the runners. The Express & Star photographer spotted the array of Birchfield vests and called for a group picture, has anyone seen it yet? All 13 Stags then continued with their individual warm up routines before the start at West Park, meanwhile I went to a point about 300 metres from the start where I could watch the very popular cycle race pass by followed by the relay runners. From here I could go to the 2 mile point shout words of encouragement to our gang then relax in the sun for an hour before cheering on the finishers. There was plenty to see in the park, good for spectators, particularly with the excellent weather.
The aforementioned weather took its toll on a few of our contingent, showing up the lack of training for the distance by some of them! Only Alex’s performance was “normal”, achieving his usual 80%. No one achieved a 70% plus performance, which was disappointing but perhaps showing up the national trend. The winner of the marathon, held at the same time, was 45 and ran 2:46, I’ll say no more!
In the GP overall, Michael continues his rise
in the table and is now in 3rd place. Peter D and Lynette both drop a place while John (BJ)
and Peter L move up two places. There are now only 5 runners out of a total of 50 who have done 6 or
more races!! Alex has increased his lead slightly by
another 2 points and now has a 36-point advantage over Martin.
